Courses and Curriculum

Our school is open every Saturday from 9 am to noon*. The school year starts in September and ends in June, which corresponds to Fremont/New Haven School Districts.

* 2 pm for high school credit course students.

We offer Japanese Language course and Bilingual course classes for students from K to 12th grade. Lessons in each class are designed to learn all of the following aspects of Japanese language and culture:

  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Speaking
  • Listening
  • Vocabulary
  • Sentences
  • Culture

In addition, our class sizes are small (from 5 to 12) so that each course can be designed to be responsive to the needs of students.

Japanese Language Course
In Level 1 class, students between 5 and 7 years old learn reading/writing hiragana, basic vocabulary and greetings. Japanese language classes are designed for students from non-Japanese speaking households. As they progress in establishing 4 core elements of reading, writing, speaking, and listening, they will be introduced to katakana, kanji, advanced composition and conversation. Level 4 course uses a college level textbook. Students in this level will be able to hold everyday conversation and have intermediate level reading and writing skills.

Bilingual Classes
Bilingual classes are designed for students who come from Japanese speaking households. All instructions are given in Japanese and use textbooks distributed by Ministry of Education. We also use various supplemental materials to adjust our curriculum to suit each student’s level. Class placement and material selection are based on students' level and not on the actual grade level, so that they can start from the right level and continue their progress at their own pace.

High School Afternoon Credit Course
High school students who spend 5 hours every week can earn high school foreign language credits. (*conditions differ among school districts, plase click here for more details.) In the afternoon, we provide classes which introduce them to Japanese culture and preparation for Japanese Language Proficiency Test.
